The B.C. human rights tribunal has approved a plan by Richmond to allow 75 per cent of new jobs in its fire department to go to visible minorities and women.
The tribunal is allowing preferential recruitment because Richmond wants to have a diverse work force free from discrimination, said Phyllis Carlyle, general manager of the city’s law and community safety department.
“This decision provides the department the ability to better reflect the community it serves and does not exclude or eliminate Caucasian men,” she said.
