
It was a bright idea for its time, but after more than a century of lighting up our homes it will soon be lights out for the wasteful “Edison” bulb.
The province said yesterday it will become the first major jurisdiction in North America to ban conventional incandescent bulbs and other inefficient lighting technologies by 2012 as it tries to reduce the province’s electricity consumption and lower the greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming.
“It’s the equivalent of taking 250,000 cars off the road,” said Environment Minister Laurel Broten, who made the announcement with Energy Minister Dwight Duncan.
