[Why does he not claim asylum in Thailand?-ed]
OTTAWA TORONTO — North American human-rights organizations and a Liberal senator are urging the fledgling Conservative government to act as an advocate for a Chinese dissident languishing in a Thai detention centre.
Lu Decheng spent nine years in a Chinese prison for splashing paint on the famous Mao portrait in Tiananmen Square, and later fled to Thailand in late 2004, where he has been able to secure an immigrant visa to allow him to settle permanently in Canada.
But Mr. Lu was arrested by Thai police and is being held in a detention centre in Bangkok, where Chinese diplomats are pushing hard for his extradition.
